Joseph Turrin
Ceramics / Curatorial & Exhibition Practice
Joseph Turrin is a ceramic artist, curator and exhibitions professional working across contemporary ceramics, sculpture and exhibition development in the Hunter region. His practice explores form, colour, texture and materiality, drawing inspiration from nature, landscape and the handmade. His work ranges from functional ceramics and vessels to sculptural works, with a strong emphasis on experimentation and the expressive possibilities of clay.
Joseph was the recipient of the 2016 Royal Doulton & UNSW Art & Design Award, which included a month-long internship with the Royal Doulton global design team at the Wedgwood factory in Stoke-on-Trent, UK. In 2021, he was the inaugural winner of the Bluethumb Art Prize for Sculpture. He also spent five years as manager of Kil.n.it Experimental Ceramics Studio, supporting a large community of ceramic artists and developing his experience across making, studio management, professional practice and creative collaboration.
Joseph currently works as Exhibitions Coordinator at PACC Gallery, Cessnock City Council, where he develops and curates an ongoing exhibition program, working with artists, galleries, touring organisations and creative practitioners. His role provides experience across exhibition development, curatorial practice, artist liaison, installation, programming and the broader professional realities of working within the visual arts sector.
As a mentor, Joseph hopes to provide emerging artists with practical insight into developing a sustainable creative practice, particularly around ceramics, sculpture, exhibition opportunities, professional presentation and navigating the arts sector. He is interested in supporting artists to develop their ideas and confidence while encouraging experimentation, curiosity and a strong connection between concept, material and making.
