In First Century Messianic Jew in Prayer, artist Kimberlie Eadie explores themes of faith, persecution, and spiritual endurance. The figure emerges from a subdued field of light and shadow, his silenced mouth symbolising the censorship and persecution endured by the earliest followers of Christ and echoed in the ongoing persecution of Christians and Jews today. Isolated within a vast, quiet space, the figure’s posture of prayer speaks not of defeat, but steadfast faith amid adversity.
Part of Eadie’s continuing collection exploring sacred narrative and the human condition, the work is rendered through layered charcoal, soft erasure, translucent acrylic, and restrained passages of gold. The portrait emerges almost sculpted from clay, referencing humanity’s creation from dust, while the gold alludes to faith refined through trial and the enduring presence of the divine.
Inspired by James 1:2, the work reflects on the paradox of finding joy amid suffering.
