About the artwork:

This small sculpture, titled ‘Ocean Object’, has been composed of natural and unnatural objects carried by ocean currents and tides. Collected by the artist from both Newcastle beaches and the shores of Itoshima, Japan, the materials of this work are not what often come to mind when envisioning something from the sea. Found melted plastics, often referred to as pyroplastic or plastiglomerate (when fused with natural rock and sand), have been attached, barnacle-like, to a solid driftwood form. Painted with a pearlescent paint reminiscent of a shell’s interior, the coating serves to co-locate these two opposing materials as ‘ocean-based’, while the yellow and black steel nails alert and warn the viewer to the hazards and presence of plastics found in the marine environment.
