Textiles

@warp_and_cross studio artist Sara Prince works in textiles with a focus on weaving

Sara Prince is an artist living and working in Newcastle, Australia. Her monochromatic and distinctive textural work explores the growth patterns and protective surfaces seen in the Australian fauna and flora. Using the medium of handweaving and fiber manipulation, she is fascinated particularly by the marks on gum trees produced by the Scribbly Gum Tree Moth as it travels its way under the bark of the tree.
She is passionate about her artistic process and would like to change people’s perception of the handweaving process to something more contemporary. Creating unique modern wall-based textile artworks. She uses elements from the French technique of Passementerie and hand weaving, she aims to create the continuous line and movement created in nature.
Sara holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree Hons in Constructed Textiles at Liverpool John Moores University Liverpool, UK. In 2000 Sara was selected as part of the North West Arts Setting Up Scheme which provided visual artists with the opportunity to develop their own practice. Part of this process provided studio space and the opportunity to gain the necessary skills to establish themselves as educators in schools. In her second year Sara was the artist in residence at the educational Drumcroon Educational Gallery in Wigan, UK.
