Joy in the Dance, Sorrow in the Heart
About the artwork:
Their lives were never to be the same. An arrival of strangers and a new colony governed by harsh military rule. Populated by convicts and young convict women destined for Newcastle’s Female Factory. It was a dark time. I like to imagine the gaoled girls escaping and joining the Awabakal and Worimi girls by the beach, dancing joyfully in the manner of Matisse’s’ Joy of Life.
