A Break In The Rain
About the artwork:
Artwork Statement – A Break in the Rain
A Break in the Rain captures my lived experience of Newcastle’s shifting atmosphere, where sudden downpours give way to moments of clarity and light. The layered brushwork and rhythmic lines echo the city’s mix of grit and renewal, while the interplay of colour suggests both turbulence and calm. It reflects how I interpret Newcastle as a place of resilience and constant transformation, shaped by its coastal weather, industrial heritage and community energy.
Artist Bio – Jonathan Osmond
Jonathan Osmond is a Newcastle-based abstract artist whose practice is shaped by the coastal textures, soundscapes and shifting atmospheres of the Hunter region. His work draws upon lived memory, intuition and the push and pull between spontaneity and control, creating paintings that move between gesture and structure, chaos and calm.
Having developed a long-standing connection to the local creative community, Jonathan’s paintings often reflect the dual character of Newcastle itself, its raw industrial edges contrasted with moments of stillness, renewal and natural beauty. His layered compositions invite viewers to experience a state of reflection and open-ended interpretation, where colour, movement and texture become a language beyond words.
Jonathan’s artistic journey is informed by his background in events and cultural promotion, as well as his lifelong immersion in music and underground dance culture. These influences infuse his work with rhythm, energy and a sense of collective memory, making each piece both deeply personal and broadly resonant.
Living and working in Newcastle, Jonathan continues to evolve his practice through an exploration of place, connection and the transformative potential of abstraction.
