About the artwork:
This work is about Newcastle,a place that has nurtured me and my family. The bright palette is resonant of shifting ocean light,reflected upon scruffy bottlebrushes found growing in sandy soil close to the beach,and exotic shells found secondhand at a local market.
Ive shifted north west to the great dividing range now but often feel a deep yearning for the golden light and salty winds of my old Newcastle home.
BIO- JO SHAND (b.1970,Sydney) painter/ceramicist,primarily exploring themes of place,memory and organic aspects of modern Australian culture. Exhibited extensively including as a finalist in Mosman, North Sydney,Muswellbrook and Gosford prizes,S.H.Ervins Salon de Refuses and many regional galleries. Attended National Art School.
