‘Headland’ is a response to layers. The site is Whibayganba / Nobbys (Newcastle, NSW) with layers of history, layers of geology and layers of culture.

It is a significant site for Awabakal people. The rocky outcrop was once an island but is now linked by a colonial era break-wall. The layers of rock feature seams of coal.

In this one location there is cultural learning and Awabakal stories. The site saw the arrival of colonists, settlement, the impacts of mining and works to make the harbour safe for shipping.

‘Headland’ encompasses the layers of complexity, both tangible and intangible.

‘Headland’ is a testament to time.
