Line of Sight forms part of a recent body of work I have made that explores anthropocentrism. The work is humans and animals, their relationships and perspectives on each other. In the painting, I am holding a cat to my eye as if it were a firearm; in contradiction to the aggressive nature of my figure in the work, the cat seems content and happy, sporting a smiley-faced collar. The work is a reflection on what it means to have a pet and asks if ownership of another living being is correct. The title also refers to the fact that no matter where you stand, the figures appear to be looking at you. The joy you can bring an animal and the joy an animal can bring you is called into question. It asks us how much of what we see in our pets is human-centric projection, gaze, perspective or assumption.
