This mosaic was created during my time in Italy, using traditional Roman techniques and hand-cut Italian marble and stone. It is a reinterpretation of a detail from the richly storied floors of La Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, Sicily, specifically from the “Young Boys Hunting a Rabbit” scene, part of the famed Child Hunters Mosaic.
I was drawn to the pomegranate motif for its rhythm, symmetry, and symbolic richness, a fruit long associated with fertility, prosperity, and enduring beauty. Each tessera was laid by hand using the direct method on lime, framed in timber, and bordered with coloured liquid concrete.
This work is a quiet tribute to Roman craftsmanship, and a meditation on timelessness, tradition, and the way ornament and pattern connect us across centuries. It speaks to the patience of process, the beauty in detail, and the ongoing dialogue between past and present.
