I begin by drawing a tessellated pattern using a compass and ruler on card. In this instance I photocopied the finished pattern onto several pieces of card and layered the card to create a contoured cardboard 'canvas'. Each layer shows an aspect of the pattern. I placed a diffraction grating at the center of each star so that natural light would produce colours where no colour exists. This represents the (not necessarily apparent) creative spirit that builds and maintains our world.
