'Mother' explores the dichotomy of motherhood.
Almost aggressively feminine, completely bejewelled and crowned with pearls, she is a queen or holy icon, a divine entity bringing forth new life.
Yet she is faceless, featureless, without eyes or mouth or hands. Stripped of her identity, she is a sacred vessel, but still, just a vessel.
Split from throat to foot, she becomes a labial gateway, gloriously and painfully bursting with new life.
Thousands of hand placed rhinestones adorn 'Mother', the vibrant sparkles at odds with the tedious process of applying them. The practice itself a meditation on motherhood- a contrast of beautiful chaos and repetitive labour.
