Newcastle is the largest coal port in the world. This painting looks across the Port towards Carrington, and imagines a future just years from now, where instead of coal, seaweed farms grow.

In the place of coal… seaweed.

Seaweed is renowned for its power in carbon sequestration, drawing down carbon out of the atmosphere.

Every time I walk by Newcastle Port, I imagine it full of seaweed farms, people harvesting seaweed to feed to cattle to reduce methane… street art advertisements for seaweed beer.

This painting imagines the possibility: what if, in the place most known for coal, it could be known for drawing down carbon?
And if this city could reimagine it, would could it begin?
