Works on Paper
My practice involves turning in a photograph into a painted stencil by distilling the image into distinct contrasting tones, digitally hand tracing the myriad constituent shapes over various of colour layers, then laser cutting those layers into stencils to be spray painted through. The drawing process takes months, the painting is over in an hour.
I find the nature of aerosol stenciling is that it captures the feeling of light, air and atmosphere very effectively, perhaps given the literal lightness of the paint suspension borne to the paper via air.
The image presents the landscape of an alpine plain on a hiking trip in Barrington Tops. It was just before sunset, we were late to camp, and worn out from the day, but when the atmosphere turned golden and the shadows suddenly struck across the landscape, we all stopped to enjoy the moment. It is the feeling of the atmosphere in that moment I aim to capture in this work.
