Artemis is re-contextualised, reimagining of ‘The Bride’ by Max Dupain. The original patriarchal view of the virginal bride has been metamorphosed to one of strength, dignity, and beauty. Instead of recreating the historical view of Artemis as a hunter, I portrayed Artemis as a harmonious and sympathetic Goddess, magnanimous and connected to the world around her with nature at its core. It is a celebration of the original pagan origins of religion and celebrates innate feminine power. The deer is placed on her arm, rather than with a traditional arrow, symbolising her peaceful relationship with the creatures. The animals are scaled unrealistically to demonstrate her acceptance and inclusion of all animals regardless of size or their place in the environment. I am particularly interested in subverting traditional views of how women are portrayed in art. I create my images using analogue collage technique.
