My painting, Kimberley Morning, is based on some gouache studies I did en plein air. While travelling in the Kimblerley I was taken by the strong light and colours of the early morning. What struck me was the stark contrast between the foreground headland in deep morning shadow, against the brightly lit cliffs in the background. I applied a Burnt Sienna ground to the canvas and explored playing off transparencies against solid colour.
The combination of using bristle brushes and a palette knife created varying textures across the surface. My painting reflects the strong impression this landscape made on my senses that morning.
