The subject of the work is a recurring dream figure I have named "Grace Matango". The cyclops itself represents my own inner self and subconscious mind, a colourful and vibrant place. The abyss of negative space surrounding the portrait is representative of the unconscious dream state and is linked through colourful strokes to the subject portrait which is representative of the space between wakefulness and sleep where hypnagogic colours and patterns emerge and swirl within a mind on the verge of sleep. The artwork aims to give a shape and face to formless dream state imaginings.
