About the artwork:
‘Fragile Systems’ speaks of the fragility of the human body, and the systems in Australia charged with caring for individuals going through illness. My identity is seen by the health system at times, as only dictated by the body parts which malfunction, my heart, my nervous system and my stomach, heavily surveilled and constantly measured through scans and electrodes. The whole person underneath the gown is rarely seen, left to navigate a health system that is buckling under the weight of COVID-19 and a major lack of resources and services, especially for those living with chronic and complex illness. Using medical supplies as my medium, incorporating elements of sculpture and printmaking, my hope is that this piece creates some discussion about what we’re missing at the heart of healthcare, the human beings behind the gown, rendered invisible by these ‘Fragile Systems’.
