About the artwork:

When you start drifting into sleep, are you aware of it? I often wonder why we never remember the moment it happens, or the first thing we see or feel as a dream begins. The In-between delves into that fragile threshold known as Hypnagogia, the transition between wakefulness and dreaming. In this work, I visualise what I imagine unfolds in those seconds when reality loosens and melts into the In-Between. Through comforting to more disturbing uses of light, movement and symbolic objects, the painting captures my interpretation of how Hypnagogia begins: quietly from the darkness, mysteriously, and with a sense of transformation that feels both intimate and otherworldly. Surrealist Artists like Frida Kahlo, René Magritte and Hieronymus Bosch were used as my inspiration for this painting. The work does not offer answers, only an opening; a safe space for viewers to follow and consider what your mind might reveal in those transparent moments when dreaming first begins.
