During an afternoon with friends enjoying the outdoors following an autumn rain, I noticed an amber ashtray. Seeing the bowl filled with butts, covered by a glassy surface of water with flowers resting atop it, I reflected on the idea that many people, myself included, will hide many poisonous flaws, habits, and fragilities, with a transparent film of pleasantry and confidence wishing to fit in.
