Paintings have their own timelines it seems, this one was a work in progress for almost a year, receiving attention whenever I had a little free time between other projects. On two occassions I attempted to resolve it in time for an exhibition deadline, but it simply would not be hurried. It was inspired by an early morning swim at Wylie's Baths in Coogee. The sunlight was the hot, bright February kind and the natural rock bottom created all sorts of beautiful patterns. Interesting things can happen to light rays as they pass through water, behaving much like a glass prism, splitting it into its full spectrum of colours. Like some mythical shapeshifter, these ribbons of dispersed light are elusive and fleeting.
