Brett Piva
Public art
Brett Piva is a Newcastle based painter, sculptor, public installation artist and curator. He is the founder, director and curator of Onwards Gallery and Newcastle’s premier arts conference MAKE IT–MADE IT Conference. Piva’s work intersects two worlds; the natural landscape and the manufactured surfaces of urbanised space. Diverse organic markings sourced from long sojourns in remote environments are recreated on various substrates which form a playful reflection between the organic and synthetic. Piva has exhibited in Japan, United States, The United Kingdom and across Australia. He has successfully achieved multiple artist residencies and will soon embark on his third artist in residence in Japan in 2025. As mentor, Piva will provide methods that form a visual language within numerous mediums and substrates through valuable research and experimentation. This can be demonstrated in either a studio practice or within processes for larger public works from concept to completion.
