About the artwork:
The Gathering explores the vessel through a biomorphic lens in a series of pieces that communicate connection whilst having a conversation about individual self-expression. Each character has its own unique personality while maintaining its place in the tribe. A gathering traditionally presents itself as an opportunity to adorn oneself. It can enhance beauty, provide identity, personal status, or it may be culturally symbolic. Adornment is the physical expression of individuality; however, a metaphorical notion may be provided by the vessel as a carrier of the true beauty and achievement that is contained within.
My work at first conveys a primary, pure, and minimalist aesthetic. Anatomical forms constructed of black mid-fire clay push the hierarchy of scale and proportion, using a modernist language of shape and form. It then adopts, in contrast, a more decorative perspective; assigning meaning to ornamentation that is inspired by the rich colours and textures of tribal adornment.
