About the artwork:
“Landscape in the air – Gusts” is experimental in that it uses wire as a painting medium but also because it exposes our subconscious assumptions about wire.
Perception of material is not just visual but layered with assumptions, and when those assumptions are confounded by conflict, we become engaged.
Wire is rigid: it is a structural element. Our mind does not perceive it as a substitute for a pen or the marks a pen makes -fluid lines, textural shade. Neither does it expect it be hung on a wall competing with painting as an abstract form of contemporary art. But here that happens and our preconceived perceptions are challenged.
Structurally, the piece is a wire “Punto in aria”. It is an Australian landscape – seen from a sculptural perspective. The action of wind on sand in a desert creates ripples in the sand and exposes rubble and other flotsam.
