About the artwork:
The afterbirth, or third stage of labour, is traditionally defined as the birth of the placenta. This artwork explores the broader post-birth period including the physical recovery from birth, the cataclysmic changes to relationships, the mental load of caregiving, and the changing identity of the primary carer. The artist explores the relationship of the primary carer and the newborn through the subtle layering of colour and texture, representing the spectrum of emotions - boredom, frustration, fear, anxiety, joy and love. The mixed media ironically nods to historically female pursuits (painting, embroidery, drawing, sewing). Overall, the artwork encapsulates the afterbirth of the newborn, and the rebirth of the mother.
