Newcastle Art Space is one of Newcastle’s oldest community arts organisations, founded in 1983.
Newcastle Art Space is a self-funded not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. It has tax deductible charity status.
Newcastle Art Space provides studio work-spaces for 26 artists, operates an exhibition gallery, offers three annual art prizes, organises art workshops, delivers professional development training for emerging artists, operates an intern program and encourages volunteering.
The position is based in Tighes Hill, Newcastle, NSW.
The general manager reports to a board of directors.
Newcastle Art Space is looking to employ a dynamic, suitably qualified general manager who will lead the continued development of the organisation in accordance with the five-year strategic plan.
The focus of the plan is to develop Newcastle Art Space as a dynamic, innovative, contemporary, arts’ hub; where artists, arts and audiences mingle: a creative hub that is self-sustaining, profitable and entrepreneurial.
The ideal candidate will be a motivated leader and arts manager who can run the space, understands business from a financial perspective, has proven ability to work collaboratively with a board, staff, artists and tenants to achieve outlined targets, delivering quality arts and cultural programs to engage the local and wider community.
Understanding of the role of the general manager; its relationship to the board of directors of a not for profit arts and cultural organisation; as a manager of a small team, including interns and volunteers; as a liaison with company and community members.
Demonstrated ability to achieve performance targets focusing on financial sustainability.
Organisational skills focusing on ensuring smooth day-to-day company operations.
Ability to prioritise work, meet deadlines and work flexible hours.
Written and oral communication skills with a capacity to write successful grant applications, manage social media, develop marketing materials and media releases.
Capacity to develop contacts and partnerships: make connections with new audiences; working with similar arts’ based organisations and industries; developing community and corporate initiatives both within and beyond the Newcastle arts community.
Desirable knowledge, skills and ability
Relevant tertiary qualifications and /or similar experience in the field or recognised achievement in one or more area of the arts.
Ability to deliver events, exhibitions, arts workshops, public programming and professional training opportunities; working within a time-frame to produce negotiated outcomes.
Demonstrated understanding of the most recent developments in the world of arts and culture.
Salary and Conditions
Permanent part-time position 24 hours per week to be reviewed annually
Salary $35.00 per hour based on skills and experience of the successful applicant
