Artist Name:
Michelle Hallinan
Ghosts of Hollywood
About the artwork:

Jesmond bushland topography is familiar from regular walks. The destruction to make way for the Inner-City Bypass has been devastating and revealing, unveiling the remains of Hollywood, a shanty town that arose during the Great Depression. I wondered about the stories of people layered in the earth over thousands of years. I look at the wide band of exposed earth remembering the trees that once stood like sentinels watching over and imagine their ghosts hoovering, a gentle presence.

About the artist:

I moved here five years ago and enjoy experiencing Newcastle from the water: river, harbour and ocean as a paddler. My other place of solace is regular walks in nearby Jesmond bushland.
