The Fernleigh tunnel forms part of Newcastle's historic industrial railway infrastructure. The line--now repurposed as a recreational walking and biking trail--retains much of the original railway geometry of gentle curves, gradients, cuttings and embankments, and this tunnel beneath the Pacific Highway.
The otherwise rectangular painting employs a projecting 'tongue' of dappled sunlight to anticipate re emergence into open space, light and air.
