Natalie Engdahl (b.1969, Sydney, Australia) is a multi-media artist creating sculpture, installation and two-dimensional works. By focussing on technique, materials, colour and pattern, Natalie forms quirky, tangible pieces that bear witness to traditional craft practices.
Making use of collected recycled fabrics and Australian wool fibre, Natalie stitches and creates original artworks such as soft bird sculptures, felted terrariums, scrap fabric necklaces. She also runs classes both at NAS and elsewhere in felt making.
The meditative nature of stitching and the power of creating something using materials that hold memories of a previous life show in the delicate, tactile nature of the works. There is something quintessentially Australian in much of her art, as Natalie examines her place as a relative newcomer in this ancient land.
Natalie Engdahl currently lives in Newcastle, working from a studio at Newcastle Art Space.
