Katrina Kellett is the founder of Pirate Purl Yarns, a plucky little hand-dyed yarn business. Dyeing with both natural and synthetic dyes, Katrina is passionate about the complex characteristics and chemistry of attaching colour to wool. When she isn't dyeing yarn Katrina can be found hand-spinning or hand-knitting fabulous shawls and sweaters.
Katrina's passion for supporting small business and sourcing materials produced here in Australia means a number of the yarn bases she works with are certified by the Australian Fibre Collective, recognising them as wholly produced onshore.
The transparency and intimacy of her supply chain brings her together with primary producers and textile artists. Inspired by both the beginning and the end of the process, Katrina finds herself up to her elbows in the middle of this very colourful supply chain.
Since joining the artistic community at Newcastle Artspace Katrina has been an active and valued member participating in gallery installations, openings, working bees and open days. In return she has benefited enormously from the sharing of knowledge, expertise and inspiration within the creative community.
