The title piece belonging to a current body of work, " into the woods " is an abstract oil pastel drawing that explores the concept of " going bush " or man's desire to turn one's back on all of the complications of modern life and seek a simpler one closer to nature. I explore themes of disengagement from society, solitude and isolation. I still refer to the beauty of the Australian bush, drawing it in bold, abstract colour, while at the same time the landscape becomes a metaphor for the human psyche. The work is inspired by Henry David Thoreau who wrote in his book " Walden ", " I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach..."
