“Small Gifts” was inspired by the chance discovery of a tiny abandoned nest on my driveway during a particularly difficult day. Encountering this fragile object became an unexpected moment of comfort and grounding. Delicately constructed from fine twigs woven together with soft fibres, the nest revealed, on closer inspection, a remarkable combination of natural seeds and discarded man-made materials. I was moved by the quiet ingenuity and care of the mother bird in creating such a safe and gentle shelter. Although the nest had fallen from the tree, I chose to imagine it was no longer needed — that the young bird had already flown out into the world. Through this work, I reflect on resilience, nurture, loss and hope, and on the small, unexpected gifts nature offers us in moments when we need them most.
