About the artwork:
“Quiet witness” invites reflection on hidden stories and difficult truths surrounding neglect and historical abuse. The image of the broken doll is unsettling, creating tension between suggestion and knowing it was once a much-loved childhood treasure.
The handwritten alphabet and numbers, rendered through screen-printing, evoke early childhood learning and memory. In contrast, the doll is depicted using half-tone dots, referencing media representation that has drawn attention and light to stories.
“Quiet witness” combines painting and screen-printing processes in an experimental fusion. Painting (singular and unique) is brought into dialogue with printmaking (multiples and repetition). Here, both are employed in the creation of a single work.
This interplay of techniques creates a visual and conceptual tension, resisting easy categorisation. Similarly, the work invites you to engage with what is both absent and present, quietly filling in the spaces between the lines.
